PROGRAM GOALS FOR SPANISH 101-202

At MSU, our goal is to create a proficiency-oriented language program with the following goal:

By the end of Spanish 202, 50% of all students exiting the program will have reached the Intermediate Mid level of the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages assessment for Spanish. 


The following is a reduced version of the ACTFL description of this proficiency level:

Speakers at the Intermediate Mid sublevel are able to handle successfully a variety of uncomplicated communicative tasks in straightforward social situations. Conversation is generally limited to those predictable and concrete exchanges necessary for survival in the target culture. These include personal information related to self, family, home, daily activities, interests and personal preferences, as well as physical and social needs, such as food, shopping, travel, and lodging.

Intermediate Mid speakers tend to function reactively, for example, by responding to direct questions or requests for information. However, they are capable of asking a variety of questions when necessary to obtain simple information to satisfy basic needs, such as directions, prices, and services.

Intermediate Mid speakers are able to express personal meaning by creating with the language, in part by combining and recombining known elements and conversational input to produce responses typically consisting of sentences and strings of sentences. Their speech may contain pauses, reformulations, and self-corrections as they search for adequate vocabulary and appropriate language forms to express themselves. In spite of the limitations in their vocabulary and/or pronunciation and/or grammar and/or syntax, Intermediate Mid speakers are generally understood by sympathetic interlocutors accustomed to dealing with non-natives.

This is an ambitious goal to be sure! But we can do it. To this end, we are redesigning courses, course goals, teaching and learning materials, and testing to reflect these goals. You may encounter things “done differently” from previous study, either in your high school or at another college or university. This is to be expected if you have not been enrolled in a language curriculum with a proficiency-oriented goal such as ours. Our aim is to dovetail our materials and practices toward achieving this goal, and thus our practices and testing may seem different to you.


 SPANISH 101

This is a beginning course for students with two years or less of high school Spanish. Anyone with more than two years of high school Spanish or who has already taken one semester or one-quarter of university-level Spanish must enroll in Spanish 102 or take the placement test. (See placement procedures)

In this course, you will initiate your ability to effect very basic communication in Spanish, usually using one and two words at a time and often in response to another person’s question. You will be able to do so in a variety of topics: family, eating habits, school schedule, physical traits, among others. You will also be able to ask simple questions related to these topics (e.g., What do you study? Do you eat vegetables everyday? Where do your parents live?). In addition, you will be able to understand, summarize and express basic information about the film, Sol y viento.

Comprehension and vocabulary are stressed over production and grammar in this course, although you will work in a variety of areas as you work on basic skills. You will see that your syllabus is set up in terms of class-hour goals and not “page numbers to be covered.”

Instructional mode is hybrid/blended. The course is worth four (4) credits but only meets face-to-face for three (3) hours a week. This means that another one (1) hour of work is completed online prior to coming to class. (This online work is not the same as standard post-class homework, which is a separate component of the course.) Students must understand that in order to receive four credit hours for a three-day a week class, they must earn the fourth credit hour through online activities and work. And as such, the online component is a substantial portion of the final grade: 25%.

Materials for the course are the digital version of the highly successful movie-based textbook Sol y viento (third edition). Purchase of these materials must be made through an MSU sanctioned bookstore.

SPANISH 201

This is the continuation course for students who had SPN 102 at MSU or a similar course at another university. It is also open to students with more than two years of high school Spanish if they place into the course via the placement test. (See placement procedures)

In this course, you will continue working on your ability to effect very basic communication in Spanish, usually speaking in short sentences, but also trying to put some sentences together and add information to something you have said. You will be able to do so in a variety of topics: ordering meals, talking about health, talking about the world around you. You will also be able to ask simple questions related to these topics. In addition, you will be able to understand, summarize and express basic information about the film, Sol y viento.

Comprehension and vocabulary are stressed over production and grammar in this course, although you will work in a variety of areas as you work on basic skills. You will see that your syllabus is set up in terms of class-hour goals and not “page numbers to be covered.”
