Mónica Leal da Silva has been an Instructor of Portuguese since 2009 at Michigan State University, where she also taught creative writing and children's literature. In Romance and Classical Studies, she has taught courses in elementary and intermediate Portuguese, as well as an advanced course on Lusophone literatures and cultures that she designed. Prior to coming to State, Mónica taught Portuguese studies at Princeton University. She also had over a decade of teaching experience at the primary and secondary levels in her native Lisbon. She is the author of four books, on topics ranging from children's literature to cultural studies. She collaborated on an edited volume on education with a substantial chapter comparing education in Portugal and the United States. Her essays on poetry, feminism, and co-adoption by same-sex couples have also appeared in national newspapers in Portugal.
